What to do if you get lost in the Carpathians: simple rules that every tourist should know
The Carpathians are easy to fall in love with. The trail leads through the forest, a new landscape opens up around the bend, and a familiar road suddenly turns into fog or opens onto a completely different clearing. That is why even a simple walk in the mountains requires caution.
It's not just beginners who can get lost. Weather changes, fog, fatigue, a dead phone, or a desire to shorten the route can confuse even an experienced hiker.
The main rule in such a situation is simple: do not panic and do not try to move on at any cost.
What to do first when you get lost
Stop
Don't keep going just because there's a road ahead. A few ill-considered turns can only increase the distance between you and a familiar part of the route.
Sit down, take a breath, and try to calmly recall recent events: when you last knew exactly where you were, what path you took, what landmark you saw.
We also recommend that if you lose your orientation, first stop and do not move randomly.
Check your phone, but save the charge
A smartphone in the mountains can be one of the most important tools.
If you have a navigation app with an offline map downloaded, open it and see where you are. We recommend downloading maps of the area in advance, as mobile coverage may not be available in the mountains.
But don't keep your screen on all the time. Reduce the brightness, turn off unnecessary features, and only use your phone when you really need it.
If you have a trust bank, now is the time to use it.
Don't try to find a direction at random.
It's easy to overestimate your sense of direction in the forest, especially when there are so many trees around, paths branch out, and the terrain is constantly changing.
You shouldn't rely on popular folk signs like moss on a tree, anthills, or the shape of a tree's crown as an accurate compass. These are unreliable guides.
If you have a compass or use a navigation system on your phone, use it. If you can't find your way, it's better to stay where you are and wait for help than to head off in an unknown direction.
When to call the rescuers
If you cannot find your way around on your own, are lost far from a familiar route, it is getting dark, the weather is getting worse, or there is an injured or exhausted person - do not delay asking for help.
In Ukraine, there is a single number 112 for calling emergency services. The service covers all regions of the country.
When talking to the operator, try to provide as much information as possible:
- your name and the number of people in the group;
- where did you start from;
- where were they going;
- approximately when and where a familiar landmark was last seen;
- what do you see around you;
- are there any injuries or other problems;
- how much water and warm clothing do you have;
- the phone number you are calling from.
If you have coordinates, you must definitely send them.
What to do if there is no mobile connection
Don't immediately decide that the phone is completely useless in such a situation.
If it has an offline map, it can show your location even without mobile internet. That's why it's better to download maps of the area before your hike.
If there is no connection and your phone's battery is running low, don't waste your battery by constantly trying to call back. Find a safe place and periodically check for connection.
If it starts to get dark
In the dark, navigating unfamiliar mountainous terrain is much more difficult.
Therefore, if daylight is ending, you should not go out randomly in search of a way. It is better to stay in a safe place, take care of warmth, protect yourself from wind and precipitation, and maintain contact with rescuers.
It is especially dangerous to descend an unfamiliar slope on your own, cross streams, or try to take a shortcut through steep sections.
What not to do
There are several solutions that can turn an unpleasant situation into a truly dangerous one:
- do not panic and do not run at random - this can make you get even more lost and stray from the route;
- do not split the group – if several of you need to stay together;
- do not go down unfamiliar slopes - from above it may seem that there is a road below, but the relief in the mountains is often deceptive;
- do not cross rapid mountain streams – in addition to the risk of being swept away by the current, you risk getting soaked to the skin. In the mountains, dry clothes are your survival, and wet clothes are a guaranteed hypothermia in just a few hours;
- Don't waste your phone's battery on continuous navigation - turn it on only periodically to check your course. Check the map every 15-20 minutes, and keep your gadget in power saving mode the rest of the time;
- Don't hesitate to ask for help – if you feel disoriented, make a quick call to your family, friends, or your hotel administration while your phone still has network coverage.
The Carpathians love attentive tourists
Mountains do not require extraordinary skills from tourists. But they do not forgive haste and self-confidence.
Before you go for a walk, you should know your route, monitor the weather, and have a plan for emergencies. And if you do get lost, the main thing is not to try to prove to yourself that you can find your way.
The best way to avoid problems is to think about them before you go out.
Before the hike:
- inform the hotel reception where you are going and when you plan to return;
- download an offline map;
- check the phone's charge;
- take a power bank;
- check the weather forecast;
- wear shoes suitable for mountainous terrain;
- take a supply of water;
- do not set off on a route that does not match your physical fitness;
- Remember landmarks along the way.
And remember, a good walk in the Carpathians is not the one where you managed to go as far as possible. It's the one after which you return with new impressions and a desire to go to the mountains again.
If you just want to walk through the Carpathians
Not every walk in the Carpathians has to turn into an hour-long mountain hike. Sometimes you just want to walk through the forest, breathe in the fresh air, admire the views, and return to a comfortable rest.
There are various options for this in Vojvodina. The resort can be a convenient starting point for hikers. tourist routes of varying duration and difficulty – from short walks to longer hikes in the mountains.
