Skiing: tips for beginners
The first time on skis is like the first time on a bike. It's a little scary, a little uncomfortable, but when you go downhill on your own, you realize that this is love forever. The Voyevodyno ski resort in Transcarpathia is ready to make your acquaintance with skiing comfortable, safe and joyful.
It doesn't matter how old you are - 7, 20 or 40 - skiing is not chosen by age. The main thing is the desire to try something new, feel the freedom of movement and get a big dose of adrenaline. For many, this sport has become an integral part of active recreation.
Why you shouldn't be afraid to start
The biggest obstacle for beginners is the feeling of fear. “What if I fall?” “What if I can’t do it?” “What if I look ridiculous?”
Never mind. Everyone falls, even the pros. Falling is part of learning. The snow is soft, the equipment is protective, the instructors are there. No one laughs at beginners – everyone has been there once.
We at Vojvodina understand this. Our resort has created an atmosphere where you can learn to ski confidently without shame or fear, and enjoy every little bit of progress.
Of course, you can learn to ski on your own. But in practice it takes longer, is more difficult and there is a risk of injury. We suggest you use the services of our ski school, where experienced instructors will teach you to stand confidently on skis. Namely:
- for children – game techniques to make learning interesting and fun;
- for adults – clear explanations and training in technique;
- There can be individual lessons or group lessons (group lessons are cheaper and more fun).
What the instructor gives:
- correct technique from the very beginning – you won't have to relearn;
- confidence – there is a professional nearby who will catch you if you fall;
- rapid progress – one lesson with an instructor is equal to a week of independent attempts;
- safety – you will learn how to fall correctly, brake, and avoid collisions.
Equipment and gear: what you need to know
Don't buy everything at once! This is the first and most important tip. Until you are sure that the skis are yours, there is no point in spending thousands on equipment.
At the beginning of your skiing career, it would be advisable to use equipment rental in Vojvodino. Here you can rent skis, boots, poles, helmets - everything is selected for your height, weight, level. All our equipment is in good condition and safe, if something does not fit - you can always exchange it. Moreover, the rental price is much lower than buying it.
When going to the Carpathians to a ski resort, we recommend taking with you:
- warm clothes – thermal underwear, fleece jacket, ski jacket and pants (preferably waterproof);
- socks – high and thick and in no case cotton;
- warm waterproof gloves;
- a hat – to cover your ears;
- glasses or a mask - to protect your eyes from bright sun and snow;
- Face cream – so that frost and wind do not dry out the skin.
For children, you need the same things, plus a helmet. We also rent children's equipment.
Learning: first steps
In this sport, skiing technique is important, which you will master during training. The instructor will teach you:
- stand and walk – simply stand on your skis and take steps. The correct stance allows you to evenly distribute the load, maintain balance, and control the movement;
- go straight – on easy slopes, the instructor holds you, and you just go straight. The first slide is an unbeatable feeling;
- The rules of safe falling are also one of the main skills in skiing. You need to fall sideways, facing the slope, lying on the snow as if you want to sit down. This technique of falling allows you to prevent possible injuries;
- brake – during descents, it does not allow the skis to accelerate and helps control the speed. There are several techniques. Plow – when the toes of the skis are together, the heels apart. This is basic braking for beginners. And herringbone – when the skis are smoothly directed from side to side. You need to be careful and adhere to a certain trajectory of skiing;
- safe turns – once you have learned to brake, you can learn to turn. Body weight is transferred from ski to ski. This is real skiing;
- Using a towbar lift is scary at first, but the instructor will show you how to get on and off properly. After a few times, it becomes a habit.
For children, all these lessons are presented as a game. Voyevodyno instructors know how to make learning interesting. These are techniques using special techniques - “catch the snowflake”, “go to the bear”, relay races. Children do not notice that they are learning - they are just playing.
Choosing a route: don't rush into difficult ones
To learn to ski, you should choose slopes that have a moderate slope and are usually located at the foot of the mountain, which is ideal for beginners. In such conditions:
- stress-free skating technique is practiced;
- the slope is not so steep – less speed, more control;
- fewer people driving fast;
- you can stop, rest without disturbing others.
When you start to feel more confident on such tracks, only then should you move on to more difficult ones. Ambition is good, but safety is more important.
Common beginner mistakes and safety rules
The main mistakes beginners make are:
- the gaze is directed at the feet - you need to look ahead, where you are going. The body follows the gaze;
- tense muscles - you need to relax so as not to lose balance. Knees are slightly bent, hands are free;
- high speed – control and technique first, and speed later;
- they are silent about help – if you don’t understand something or are afraid of something, ask the instructor and the professionals will help;
- Forget about rest – skiing is a physically demanding activity. Take breaks, drink water, don't overexert yourself.
Our ski resort Vojvodino closely monitors the safety of skiing. Our slopes are well-groomed, there is a first aid station. But your personal responsibility is paramount. What you need to know so that skiing brings only pleasure, and not unpleasant situations and especially injuries.
On the track:
- the top skier always has the advantage, the one below chooses the trajectory;
- overtake only at a safe distance;
- keep a sufficient distance to avoid collisions with other skiers;
- do not stop on narrow sections of the road or where you are poorly visible;
- fell - quickly clear the track, climb up from the side.
Equipment:
- choose the right equipment;
- Use layering to keep warm and dry.
- wrist protection – many beginners suffer injuries when falling;
- sunscreen and glasses.
State:
- don't ride tired – falls are guaranteed;
- alcohol and skiing are not compatible – this is no joke, it is truly dangerous;
- If the weather deteriorates sharply, it is better to wait.
