At the intersection of science and myth: how the Valley of Narcissus originated
To understand the magic of this place, it is worth looking into its past. The origin of the valley is divided into two completely different, but equally fascinating stories - a strictly scientific one and an emotional folk one.
From a scientific point of view, the Valley of Narcissus in the Kireshi tract near Khust is a unique relict object of the Ice Age. Thousands of years ago, during the melting of the glacier, populations of the high-altitude narrow-leaved narcissus slid down from the mountains along with huge layers of fertile soil and water.
Usually these flowers grow high in the mountains of the Alpine belt (at an altitude of over 1000–2000 meters). However, in the Khust-Solotvinskaya Basin, due to the special microclimate, humidity, and specific level above sea level (only 180–200 meters), the flowers have adapted and formed the only such large-scale lowland population in the world.
Locals have long sought a poetic explanation for the appearance of this white sea of flowers. The most famous Transcarpathian legend connects the Valley of Narcissus with the majestic Khust Castle, which rises nearby. According to legend, a strict prince lived in the castle with his daughter Rusya. On her coming of age, rich suitors brought expensive gifts, but the girl's heart was won by the poor potter Ivanko, who gave her a vase with sculpted white daffodils that he created himself.
Love broke out between the young people and they began to meet secretly in the valley near the Khustets River. Upon learning of this, the angry prince threw the vase off a cliff. It shattered into thousands of fragments, and the next morning snow-white daffodils bloomed in that place. Since then, they say, the valley has reminded us every spring of the power of true love.
The path of impressions: from Vojvodino to a flower paradise

The distance to the protected massif “Valley of Narcissus” near Khust is about 130 km, and the road takes approximately 2-2.5 hours.

- catch the moment - the peak of flowering usually falls on mid-May. Before leaving, be sure to ask at the resort reception about the current state of flowering. Our administrators always know whether the buds have already bloomed;
- convenience above all else – the territory of the reserve is equipped with special wooden eco-trails and decks. Wear comfortable sneakers, as you will have to walk a lot;
- respect for nature - daffodils are listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. It is strictly forbidden to go down from wooden decks onto the grass and pick flowers;
- sun protection and technology – bring sunglasses, hats, and make sure your smartphones and cameras have enough memory. There will be a lot of photos!
What to see nearby
Since the road takes a lot of time, turn the trip into a full-fledged grand tour of Transcarpathia:
- Palanok Castle in Mukachevo – a majestic fortress on a mountain of volcanic origin will meet you right on the road. A great stop for coffee and a tour;
- Ruins of Khust Castle – after a walk through the valley, climb the castle hill in Khust. From there, a fantastic panorama of the city and the Tisza River opens up;
- thermal pools – if you are traveling with an adult group or with children, on the way back you can stop by the thermal waters of Velyatino or Kosino to relax your muscles after an active walk.
