Celebrating Christmas in Ukraine: traditions, rituals and features
Christmas is one of the most important and beloved holidays in the world. And Ukraine is no exception. Starting from 2023, Christmas in Ukraine is officially celebrated on December 25 according to the Gregorian calendar, as in other European countries. Christmas traditions in Ukraine go back to ancient times, combining Christian rites with the pagan customs of our ancestors.
Ukrainian Christmas is a holiday of light and family warmth. And the celebration of Christmas in Ukraine has a special atmosphere of spirituality, family comfort and generosity. This is a time when Ukrainians come together, observe ancient traditions and pass them on to future generations.
Holidays on Christmas Eve
St. Philip's Day
The Christmas fast or Pylypivka begins on November 15 (according to the new Gregorian calendar, which is followed by most churches in Ukraine, including the OCU and the UGCC) and lasts 40 days until December 24. According to the old style (Julian calendar), the fast begins on November 28 and lasts until Christmas Eve on January 6. It is a time of spiritual purification and preparation for the great holiday. The traditions of the Christmas fast include moderation in food and prayer, symbolizing restraint and spiritual purification.
Saint Nicholas
St. Nicholas Day opens the pre-Christmas period. In 2026, we will celebrate St. Nicholas Day for the third time in a new style on December 6. Children eagerly await this holiday, clean their boots and leave them by the Christmas tree, and look under their pillows in the morning, hoping for gifts from the good saint. This is one of the most beloved children's Christmas traditions.
Christmas Eve
Christmas Eve or Bagata Kutia (December 24) is the most important day before Christmas. This day concludes the 40-day Christmas Lent. It is on this evening that the main Christmas rituals take place in Ukraine.
- house cleaning;
- bringing in a didukh – a sheaf of rye or wheat, which symbolized the souls of ancestors;
- sprinkling the floor with hay - this symbolized the manger in which Jesus Christ was born;
- setting the festive table;
- The appearance of the first star – symbolizes the Star of Bethlehem and announces the birth of Christ. Only after its appearance can one sit down at the table.
On Holy Week, the whole family gathers at the festive table and prepares the traditional 12 dishes that our ancestors remember. The festive table must include 12 Lenten dishes, symbolizing the 12 apostles or the 12 months of the year.
- kutya – a main dish made from wheat, poppy seeds and honey;
- uzvar – compote made from dried fruits;
- lean borscht with ears;
- stuffed cabbage rolls with rice or buckwheat;
- dumplings with various fillings;
- stewed or sauerkraut;
- baked or fried fish;
- vinaigrette;
- mushrooms in different variations;
- donuts with garlic;
- sauerkraut;
- gingerbread or gingerbread cookies.
Christmas rituals
Christmas rituals and customs in Ukraine are centered around Christmas Eve and Christmas itself, date back to ancient times and combine both Christian traditions and ancient folk beliefs. The main symbols of Christmas in Ukraine, which create a unique atmosphere of the holiday, are:
- didukh - a symbol of abundance. Didukh at Christmas is a sheaf of wheat, oats or rye, which is placed in the corner of the house under the icons. It symbolizes abundance, fertility and connection with ancestors;
- Christmas carols and schedrivka – Christmas carols are an ancient Ukrainian tradition. After Christmas Eve and on Christmas Day, groups of carol singers go from house to house, singing ritual songs – carols, praising the birth of Christ and wishing the hosts health, prosperity and various good things. In return, the hosts treat the carol singers with sweets, give money or small gifts;
- Christmas star – an eight-pointed star worn by carolers, a symbol of the birth of Christ;
- Christmas nativity scene – a theatrical production of the birth of Jesus. The tradition of the nativity scene is especially preserved in the western regions of Ukraine;
- festive greeting - when meeting, people greet each other with the words: "Christ is born!" and respond - "Let us glorify Him!".
