Transcarpathia does not try to impress you right away. It opens up gradually, in little things that unexpectedly become the most precious memories after returning home. And that's when true love begins. Not in the scenery, but in the essence of this place, in its character, tastes, pace, people, atmosphere. In that indescribable thing that makes you come back here again and again, even when you can't exactly explain why.

Rich historical heritage: several states with one soul

Let's start with what makes Transcarpathia unique among all the regions of Ukraine. Over the past hundred years, this land has been part of several different states - Austria-Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Hungary. Each has left its mark not just in history textbooks, but in the living fabric of the region, in its architecture, in recipes, local dialect, in the character of the people.

Transcarpathia is a multi-layered region of different cultures and societies. Here, in one day, you can see an Orthodox cathedral, a Protestant church, a Catholic church, and the remains of a synagogue. They all stand side by side, as a reminder of how many peoples lived here side by side.

Transcarpathia has a thousand-year history and is one of those parts of Ukraine where you can not only read about it in books, but also see it with your own eyes. Time has changed borders, rulers and entire eras, but Transcarpathia has managed to preserve many witnesses to its history. Ancient castles, fortresses, palaces and wooden churches still remind us of the events that shaped this region over the centuries.

The castles of Transcarpathia are a separate journey through time:

• Uzhgorod Castle is one of the oldest fortresses in Transcarpathia, with a history of over a thousand years. During its existence, it has changed owners many times, but it still towers majestically over the city. Today, the Transcarpathian Museum of Local Lore operates here, and one of the best views of historical Uzhgorod opens from the castle walls;
• Palanok Castle in Mukachevo is a true symbol of the city and one of the most famous fortresses in Ukraine. Built on an extinct volcano, it remained an almost impregnable defensive structure for centuries. Today it is not only a museum, towers, dungeons, but also a place shrouded in legends about princes and knights;
• Nevytsky Castle is a romantic ruin towering over the Uzh River valley. The fortress attracts not only with its history, but also with the legend of the Pogana Diva. This is a place where nature and history create a special atmosphere and after visiting it, you understand that ruins can be more beautiful than restored castles. Due to its close location to Vojvodina, this fortress will be a great idea for a day trip;
• Khust Castle – once one of the most important defensive fortresses in Transcarpathia. Today, all that remains of it are picturesque ruins that tower on Zamkova Gora above Khust. It is from here that a panorama of the city, the Tisza Valley, and the majestic views of the Carpathian Mountains opens.

Cuisine: a history you can taste

Local cuisine is an equally important part of the trip. And if architecture tells the story of the past, then cuisine is the past that you can taste.

• bograch – a thick Hungarian goulash made from several types of meat, paprika and potatoes. It is cooked for hours on an open fire. It is not just a soup, but a kind of ritual that began with Hungarian traditions and took root in the Transcarpathian soul;
• banosh – corn porridge with sour cream, feta cheese and cracklings. A Hutsul dish that appeared in the mountains, where in winter there was nothing but corn and sheep cheese. A food of the common people, which became a delicacy;
• Bryndza – sheep cheese from the mountain pastures. Sharp, salty, with a specific aroma of mountain herbs. It may surprise you the first time, but the next time you'll be looking for where to buy it to repeat the same taste sensations;
• Transcarpathian wine is a separate conversation. The only region of Ukraine with a long winemaking tradition. Beregovo, Mukachevo, Vinohradyv - local producers grow varieties that came from Austro-Hungarian times. Tasting directly at the producer is a mandatory tourist program.

And fresh trout, homemade cheeses, palenka, lekvar, aromatic herbal teas, honey from mountain apiaries - each dish seems to continue the acquaintance with Transcarpathia. Here, food is created for long conversations, leisurely family evenings, and for that inner feeling of peace that is so rarely found in the usual rhythm of life.

Transcarpathians: warmth that cannot be faked

People occupy a special place in this history. Transcarpathians are a mixture of several cultures, and this is felt in their character. Hungarian warmth and openness, Hutsul self-sufficiency and pride, Slavic hospitality, European upbringing.

Transcarpathian hospitality is not ostentatious, it is very natural. Here, people will gladly show you the way, tell you a legend about an ancient castle, recommend a family cheese factory, or treat you to homemade jam. It is from such meetings that a special feeling of hospitality and sincere attitude is born.
